Huaweiâs premium mid-range line went into its second generation - meet the Huawei nova 2 and Huawei nova 2 plus. They leave the Honor-like design behind and look closer to the flagship P-series - down to the dual camera.
The dual camera is on the back, consisting of a 12MP sensor (1.25µm pixels) behind an f/1.8 lens and an 8MP sensor to help with optical zoom and portrait mode. On the front is a surprisingly serious 20MP selfie camera (the P10 has an 8MP cam!).
The nova 2 and nova 2 plus both feature metal unibodies and differ mainly in screen - 5â for the smaller model, 5.5â for the plus. Both are LPTS LCDs with 1080p resolution, both are covered with 2.5D curved glass.
Huawei nova 2 ⢠Huawei nova 2 plus
The metal bodies me asure only 6.9mm thick for both phones, quite slender. Still, the battery capacity is decent - 2,950mAh and 3,340mAh. Note that the Snapdragon 625 chipset of the first-gen has been replaced by a new Kirin 659 chipset.
The Huawei nova 2 and nova 2 plus pack a lot of memory for their price - 4GB RAM/64GB storage and 4GB RAM/128GB storage respectively. The nova 2 will cost CNY 2,500 ($365/â¬325), the nova 2 plus is CNY 2,900 ($420/â¬375), You can put down a CNY 100 deposit to book a unit today, sales start June 16.

A few hours ago, the Galaxy Xcover 4 was spotted in an official FCC listing - traditionally indicative of an impending release. Still, Samsung might have just broken some kind of speed record, since the handset is already up on its German website.
The specs info in the press release does seem to mostly match what we already know from previous rumors. Design-wise, it bears quite a bit of resemblance to its Xcover 3 predecessor. The main frame is strengthened and covered in rubberized coating. The back has received a similar treatment and so have the three physical buttons on the front. This is all expected, since the Xcover 4 is intended to survive tough conditions and be usable in any scenario, regardless of mud, water, or any protective gear, possibly in the way.
Samsung Galaxy Xcover 4
This is guaranteed by the IP68 and MIL-STD 810G certifications. The former is now pretty standard in the smartphone realm and basically guarantees the phone will survive being submerged at up to 1.5 meters for up to an hour, as well as some dust protection. MIL-STD 810G, on the other hand, is a lot more serious. The US military standard is used to test various equipment at extreme temperature conditions, vibrations, exposure to solar radiation and many other similar tortures. However, the most important part of the certification for many prospective Xcover 4 buyers will likely be the guaranteed protection against humidity and salt water. Both beyond the scope of most IP standards.
As for hardware specs, the Xcover 4 features a 4.99-inch, 720p, LCD panel and runs on the companys own Exynos 7570 SoC, paired with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of expandable storage. The camera setup comprises of a 13MP main shooter and a 5MP selfie one. All this is powered by a 2,800 mAh battery, which brings the total weight of the unit to 172 grams.
The Samsung Galaxy Xcover 4 will be priced at EUR 259 in European markets, where it is expected to land in April.

Samsung didnt have a strong presence at this years MWC, at least as far as our phones are concerned. The Korean giant unveiled the excellent 9.7-inch Galaxy Tab S3 and a pair of Windows 10 convertibles, under the Galaxy Book moniker. The Galaxy S8 only got its launch date teased at the end of the event.
However, as the smoke clears, we understood the companys upcoming flagship pair was brought to Barcelona and showcased to a limited number of people behind closed doors. Apparently, the same guests (mostly industry partners) were also treated to a few other early technology demos. One of the prototypes was a Force Touch implementation - far from a pioneering idea in the industry, but a first for Samsung.
Reportedly, the technology works in the same manner as Apples and Huaweis implementations, but according to eye-witness accounts, the tech appears to still be in a too early prototype stage to make it in time for the March 29 unveiling. Maybe the Galaxy Note8 will be luckier.
The backroom contained a few other interesting demos as well. To quote the lucky guest:
Samsung exhibited new technologies, including force touch, OLED without polarizer, VR headsets with high resolution and blue-less OLED. They are expected to be launched within one to two years â¦
Yes, apparently, Samsung is working on a way to remove the polarizer from its future OLED panels. This should, effectively allow for much higher brightness levels. However its not a simple task, as something will still have to stand in for the polarizing films and filter light properly. Otherwise, image sharpness and clarity will definitely take a huge hit.

And speaking of panel technology modifications, one of the other demos involved an OLED with no blue light, or at least non in the traditional, eye-straining sense. Frankly, we cant quite imagine what that would entail from this scarce description, but, hopefully we will get more info on the matter soon.
On the other hand, Samsungs reported 1200ppi VR panel demo does sound a lot easier to visualize. The companys current VR implementations top out at around 1000ppi and apparently the new technology promises to deliver up to 1500ppi sharpness. This will undoubtedly make a huge difference to picture clarity, as we are talking about screens that are mere inches away from your eyes.

Samsung has started pushing out the latest Android security update to some of its smartphones. Specifically, the Galaxy A8, J7 Prime, and Core Prime have started receiving the update which brings along Android security patch for the month of October.
As you can see in the screenshot below - which shows the build.prop files of the handsets - the update bumps the security level to October 1 (2016-10-01).
Given that the roll out has just begun, it may take time for the update notification to pop up on your device. Meanwhile, if you feel impatient, you can manually check for the update by heading to your handsets Settings menu.
